IAAF World Championship Day One

19 Year Old surprises International Scene.

After her stunning performance at the World Youth Championship, Kenyan Linet Masai captured the 10,000 meter crown in a thrilling manner. She lead the front pack in seven of the final 8 laps, until Meseret Defar pushed the pace around the 300 meter mark. Coming off the last turn, it appeared eminent that Defar secured the title with a sizable lead, but Defar's kick slowly dwindled away and her fellow countryman Meselech Melkamu and Masai fought for the title with 30 meters to go. Masai outkicked Melkamu, but Melkamu through up her hands in victory, not seeing Masai on her right peripheral barely passing the tape before. This fight at the very lead was caused by the slow pace of the race. It was tactical; Defar stayed in 20th-25th place range for the majority of the race until there was 8 laps to go, where she made her move.

"After his 19-year-old sibling’s sensational victory over the mighty Ethiopians in last night’s final (Moses Masai) have to produce one hell of a stunning performance in the men’s race on Monday to outdo her now. Not that the softly-spoken shy girl of Kenyan distance running is worried about that. Indeed, she believes her gold medal is a good omen for the Masai family."

Next Entry: 100m Final. Asafa, Bolt, Gay or a shocking Upset?
